Circle, triangle, square: ...... If there were no words to describe shapes like this, it would take a lot of effort to explain them. In this exhibition, Natsuko Nose will introduce the "names of forms" attached to Japanese arts and crafts, with text rich in new insights born from her own experiences and the serene and beautiful paintings of Aiko Hama, which will stir your imagination.
Unlike Western art, Japanese art has placed the highest value on the inheritance of beauty of form rather than the uniqueness of a single item. This is especially true of tea ceremony utensils, and there are many items that have been handed down to the present day as standard items, such as "Rikyu-style jujube" and "Kuroraku tea bowls. This has given birth to a culture unique to Japan, such as [mihashimashi (creating new value by using a certain object in a completely different way)], [makushita (imitating the shape and design of a standard or actual work)], and [honka dori (a method of quoting motifs from past works of art)], and has given rise to many forms of naegatari (a form of tea ceremony). This is the reason why many names of forms were created in Japan.
The beautiful "shape names" (......) are full of imagination, and they are full of the nature and culture typical of Japan, such as [season], [story], and [movement], while at the same time bringing complex three-dimensional forms to life in your mind with a single word. By unraveling the background of how they came to be called so, you will surely find hints that will open up new perspectives and stories.
