Description
With the change of the Japanese era from "Heisei" to "2021" and the Olympic Games just a year away, the Tokyo landscape is undergoing drastic changes due to large-scale redevelopment. One person has been documenting the storehouses that remain in a corner of the city. In addition to his main job, he calls himself a "kuraminist" and has been visiting and documenting the remaining warehouses in the center of Tokyo for more than a decade. This book is a guidebook for a "kura-meguri stroll" that introduces the kura he has visited with photographs. The author has discovered more than 100 warehouses in Tokyo* within the Yamanote Line area. The search method is unique and rational. First, you use Google Maps' Street View to identify the buildings that you think are interesting. A map published in 1945 [帝都近傍圖] is helpful in this process. The warehouses are concentrated in areas that escaped the damage of World War II, and the [帝都近傍傍圖] map records the damage caused by the Tokyo air raids. The means of transportation is bicycle. The area is not easy to get around by car and is often missed, but the area is too small to visit on foot. This method has been used to visit many valuable warehouses. There are three main types of kura: the traditional wooden* plaster-walled type, the Western-influenced brick* stone type, and the reinforced concrete type, which has been on the rise since the Great Kanto Earthquake. Although valuable from an architectural and cultural standpoint, only a few of them have been designated as cultural assets or otherwise designated for preservation, and they are disappearing rapidly in Tokyo due to demolition and redevelopment due to aging. [Kura tours are not only a casual strolling theme, but also a record of a lifestyle and culture that is being lost. In recent years, many warehouses have been renovated and converted into residences, cafes and other restaurants, stores, galleries, and other uses. The author herself lived in a house renovated from a storehouse about 20 years ago, which she says triggered her interest in storehouses. Storehouses used as stores and galleries are easy for the general public to visit, so we will conduct interviews and provide detailed information on these warehouses. [Contents] Chapter 1: Characteristics and Attractiveness of Urban Storehouses Chapter 2: Visit a kura (1) Yanesen area Chapter 3: Visiting kura (2) Ueno*Asakusa* downtown area Chapter 4 Kura wo visit 3 South of the Chuo Line area Chapter 5 Kura wo visit 4 Yamanote area Chapter 6 You also become a Kuraminist!
