映画製作においてライティングは専門職として独自の技術が培われてきました。日本では照明技師という職業が生まれ、映像に映る光のすべてをコントロールしています。しかし、映像制作に携わる方々でも『映像美をもたらすのは分かるものの、実際何をしているのかよく分からない』と言う方も多く、そのため、制作上の行き違いや不本意な結果を招く場面もしばしばあります。本書は照明技師の育成書ではなく、プロデューサーやディレクター、他の現場スタッフなど映像／映画に関わる全関係者に向けて書かれています。したがって映像美（ルック）に興味のある映画ファンやビデオグラファー、VLOGER、YouTuberも興味を持てる内容になっています。
