梵字とは仏教、とくに密教と密接な結びつきがあり、古代サンスクリット語の基礎にもなっている文字で、各仏菩薩たちをあらわしています。そして『生まれ年（干支）』によって決まる『守護尊』をあらわしたものを守護梵字といいます。この八種類の梵字にはそれぞれ一文字で御仏の功徳をあらわすとされ、干支の守り本尊とされています。
