Since ancient times, guardian Buddhas have been familiar to people as guardian deities for good luck and protection from bad luck. It is said that each of the twelve directions has eight guardian Buddhas to protect it. The twelve directions and the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac (zodiac signs) are combined to determine the guardian Buddhas. Sanskrit characters are closely connected with Buddhism, especially esoteric Buddhism, and are the basis of the ancient Sanskrit language, and represent the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. 八大守護仏と守護梵字を組み合わせました
守護仏は古来より、開運や厄除けなどの守り本尊として人々に親しまれてきました。十二の方位にはそこを守る八体の守護仏がいるといわれています。この十二方位と十二支（干支）が結びついて守護仏が定められています。
梵字とは仏教、とくに密教と密接な結びつきがあり、古代サンスクリット語の基礎にもなっている文字で、各仏菩薩たちをあらわしています。そして『生まれ年（干支）』によって決まる『守護尊』をあらわしたものを守護梵字といいます。この八種類の梵字にはそれぞれ一文字で御仏の功徳をあらわすとされ、干支の守り本尊とされています。
