Description
| Eight American high school students debate the pros and cons of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The members of the pro- and anti-nuclear groups are from various backgrounds, including May (the main character), a Japanese-American, Irish, Chinese, Jewish, and African descent. What kind of debate will ensue? And who will win? Children's literature with an anti-war theme is usually written from the perspective of the country in which it is published, but this work is a story by a Japanese author from the American point of view. The main theme of the story is whether the atomic bombing was justified or not, but the story also covers the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Sino-Japanese War, Nazism, American minorities, etc., from the standpoint of each character. [What was the war that took place in Japan?] Young Japanese readers will be able to think about this objectively through the eyes of young people in the U.S., a country that fought in the war. This is a new attempt in the YA genre by a Japanese author. |
