いにしえには、山は異界として立ち入りは
タブーとされていました。
奈良県にある三輪山など、
今でも入山制限を敷くのはその名残です。
平安時代、そんな異界に踏み込み、
山の霊力と一体になって修行を重ね、
超越的な力を得ようとする修験道の行者たちが
現れました。
修験道は仏教や神道、道教をベースに成立した
日本独自の信仰体系で、飛鳥時代に実在した
役行者を開祖とします。
中世には全国各地に霊山が誕生し、
多数の修験者が集って隆盛を迎えました。
現在、山にある神社仏閣はこの修験道ゆかりのものが

江戸時代に入ると、山に対する信仰は民衆にも広がり、
