Tracing the Culture of Japan and the Imperial Family Across the Sea with Masterpieces from the British Royal Collection

This volume contains numerous previously unpublished episodes related to the cultural exchange between the Imperial Family and the British Royal Family.
More than half of the 156 works on display will be exhibited for the first time in the world.
[Summary]
This is the Japanese-language catalogue for the exhibition Japan: Courts and Culture, which is scheduled to be held in the Queen's* Gallery at Buckingham Palace in the spring of 2020*. The Royal Collection is one of the largest and most important art collections of any European royal family, and is held in 15 royal residences and former residences throughout the United Kingdom. *The collection has been postponed to 2022.
There are many outstanding works of art, especially from Japan, and the history of each piece is unparalleled and unique, telling the story of 300 years of exchange between Britain and Japan. They are mainly royal purchases, items brought back from Japan, and gifts from Japan, including the Imperial Family. On the other hand, the existence and history of Japanese art owned by the British Royal Family is not well known not only in Japan but also in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world, and there is no other book that brings together Japanese art from the Royal Collection in one volume as this one does.
This book aims to reveal how Japanese culture was accepted overseas, especially in the United Kingdom, through the Japanese art collection that has been kept by the British Royal Family for three centuries, as well as the history of exchanges between the British Royal Family and the Japanese Imperial Family that link the two countries. The episodes of royal exchange with Japan presented in this exhibition have never been introduced in any of the past exhibitions of Japanese art or books on art history, [Anglo-Japanese Cultural Season 2019-20] and the first Englishman to reach Japan, William *Adams (Anjin Miura, 1564 -1620), the first Englishman to reach Japan.
In learning about the history of Anglo-Japanese cultural exchange, we hope that this book will provide an opportunity for many people to reacquaint themselves with the close relationship between the British Royal Family and the Japanese Imperial Family that continues to this day.
