| *Reduced size picture scroll [National Treasure: Ban Dainagon's Picture Scroll, Vol. 1]*. Heian period, Idemitsu Museum of Arts [The Tale of Genji Picture Scrolls, along with The Tale of Genji Picture Scrolls, The Caricatures of Birds, Beasts and Humans, and the Shigisan Engi Picture Scrolls, are considered one of the four greatest picture scrolls in Japan. The bold colors and depictions of people have been preserved in this color-printed, reduced-size picture scroll. It is said that in the late Heian period (794-1185), Emperor Go-Shirakawa had Tokiwa Mitsunaga paint these picture scrolls based on the "Otenmon Incident" that actually occurred about 300 years ago. 平安時代 出光美術館蔵
「源氏物語絵巻」「鳥獣人物戯画」「信貴山縁起絵巻」と並び日本の四大絵巻物の一つと称される絵巻物「伴大納言絵詞」全三巻。大胆な彩色や人物描写もそのまま、カラー刷の縮小絵巻物に仕立てました。平安時代末期、後白河法皇が300年程前に実際に起こった「応天門の変」を題材に、常盤光長に描かせた絵巻物と伝えられています。
第一巻
今は昔、水尾の帝（清和天皇）の御世に応天門が放火で焼けるという事件がありました。時の大納言、伴善男（伴大納言）の訴えにより、罪を着せられた左大臣・源信。絵巻には、黒煙をあげて燃え上がる応天門が大胆に描かれています。火災現場に向かう役人たち、燃え上がる応天門とそれを眺める群集が、切れ目のない画面に描かれます。
