Description
*Reduced Scroll [Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons] by Sakai Hoitsu (Upper and Lower Scroll Sets)**. Edo period, dated 1818 (Lent by Tokyo National Museum) This picture scroll was painted by Sakai Hoitsu, the founder of the Edo Rimpa school. As the name suggests, these picture scrolls depicting flowers and birds of the four seasons are filled with a variety of colors and creatures, and are a joy to look at. This picture scroll was painted for a nobleman's celebration when Hoitsu was 58 years old. [Among the 60 species of plants and birds that appear in "Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons", insects such as bees and praying mantis are particularly distinctive, indicating the influence of the Shijo School and Qing Dynasty flower-and-bird paintings. The first volume is [Spring, Summer, No Kacho]. It depicts flowers and birds of spring and summer, ranging from fukujuso (lucky flowers) to tsubame (swallowtail flowers) accompanied by a blue and blue running water. The "Tarashikomi" technique, inherited from Korin's painting style, is used effectively, and all the flowers, plants, and trees move gently through the space as if they were swimming in water. The lower part of the work is called "Akifuyu no hanatori. It begins with a silver full moon and a bush clover with gracefully curving branches, and ends with snow-covered white plum branches and daffodils. Hoitsu Sakai Born in Edo, the second son of the Sakai family of the Himeji domain (1761-1828). He was proficient in various arts including painting, haikai, and waka. He studied Kano painting, sketch painting, ukiyoe, Tosa school, Maruyama school, and many other styles, but was deeply devoted to Ogata Korin, who became the founder of the Edo Rimpa school. He was deeply devoted to Ogata Korin and became the founder of the Edo Rimpa school. He left delicate, elegant and lyrical works.
