*Fan [waka scroll with underpainting of cranes, calligraphy by Honami Koetsu, painting by Tawaraya Sotatsu (for women)*.

Calligraphy: Hon'ami Koetsu, Paintings: Tawaraya Sotatsu, Momoyama period, Kyoto National Museum collection

*What is a collotype*?

While offset printing, a common printing method, expresses colors and shading with a density of small dots, collotype expresses them with continuous gradation, allowing for more realistic and precise detail, similar to that of a photograph.

Calligraphy: Honami Koetsu

Born in Kyoto between 1558 and 1637. In addition to his family's swordsmanship, he produced great works in a wide variety of fields. In particular, he is known as one of the "Three Writings of Kan'ei" in the field of Noh calligraphy. In his later years, he established an art village called Koetsu-mura in Takagamine, where he produced various works of art. His representative works are
Waka scroll with underpainting of cranes (collaboration with Tawaraya Sotatsu)][Funabashi maki-e inkstone box].

Painting by Tawaraya Sotatsu

Date of birth and death unknown. Painter active from Momoyama to the early Edo period, who presided over the painting studio Eya [Tawaraya] in Kyoto. While rooted in the tradition of Yamato-e, his works are characterized by innovative forms, bold compositions, and vivid colors that are not bound by the formality of established schools. The decorative painting style originated by Sotatsu was developed into the Rimpa school by Ogata Korin. His representative work is the National Treasure
The Wind and Thunder Gods], [National Treasure: Lotus Pond with Water Fowl], [National Treasure: Sekiya Mio-marker].
