愛知県瀬戸市一帯で焼かれる陶器『瀬戸焼』。
焼き物は一般に『せともの』と呼ばれるくらい、
瀬戸地方は一千年以上に及ぶ歴史を持ち、
日本の陶磁史で中心的役割を果たしてきました。
鎌倉時代に加藤四郎左衛門景正が
中国より陶法を伝え日本陶器の起源となり
灰釉・飴釉が発明され本格的に窯業が始まりました。
桃山から江戸初期にかけて黄瀬戸・瀬戸黒・織部・志野など
茶器の類が盛んになると共に雑器も焼かれるようになります。
明治時代には海外にも多く輸出されるようになり、
織部のコーヒーセット・ポット・洋皿・陶製玩具・装飾品など、
貿易にも使われるようになりました。
