How the Japanese American incarceration experience and queerness, as symbols of collective identity, are incorporated into minority narratives--

Through a qualitative analysis of interviews, this study finds diverse intersections of discourses in the narratives of sexual/ethnic minorities in Japanese and U.S. society, and reveals how identities are constructed. Specifically, I analyzed narratives in which consent and empathy are constructed by discussing the difficulties of coming out and strategies to overcome heteronormativity, as well as narratives in which internalized hierarchies are emphasized through the invisibility* and Narratives in which the invisibility*backgrounding of heteronormativity emphasizes the internalized hierarchy. I also carefully examine how the Japanese American incarceration experience as a symbol of collective identity, Japanese-ness, and politicized queerness are incorporated into the narratives of multilayered minorities, sometimes powering solidarity and sometimes othering.
