Description
| Traditional Japanese Beauty Expressed Through Charming Forms Shigeru Uchida Washi Lighting Paper Moon PM05-G He has been active both domestically and internationally across a wide range of fields, including commercial and residential spaces, furniture, industrial design, and regional development. Shigeru Uchida introduced the world to traditional Japanese beauty through a touring exhibition at European art museums featuring his foldable tea houses [Ju-an, So-an, and Gyō-an], which he unveiled in the 1990s. Created from the perspective of an interior designer, Uchida’s product designs sought to capture the essence of traditional Japanese beauty while remaining grounded in it, even as they kept an eye on the spirit of the times. One such example is the “Paper Moon” lighting series, which utilizes the techniques of the “Gifu Lantern”—a specialty of Gifu Prefecture dating back to the Edo period and designated as a “Traditional Craft” by the national government in Heisei 7. Gifu lanterns are handcrafted by skilled artisans using thin, high-quality Mino washi paper from the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture and bamboo nurtured by Gifu’s rich natural environment. The “Paper Moon” series, created by harnessing these techniques, consists of table lamps and floor lamps that charm with their endearing, soft forms. We believe everyone will find the unpretentious, simple, and natural shapes, as well as the gentle light filtering through the washi paper, deeply endearing. While its humorous shapes—reminiscent of [mochi], [bamboo shoots], and [gourds]—and the texture of the washi paper are quintessentially [Japanese], it also blends seamlessly into any space, whether traditional Japanese or Western. ___________________________________________ Search Terms [Washi paper lighting, light, pendant, ceiling, lamp, stand, top, stylish, LED lighting, pendant light, pendant lamp, pendant top, pendant lighting, washi paper lighting, dining room, Scandinavian, light fixture, outlet, Kengo Kuma, architect, architecture chōchin, lantern, lighting fixture, fixture, Japanese style, Japanese, washi ][ akari, light, lamp, Isamu Noguchi, Isamu Noguchi, Japanese paper, washi paper, akari, Japan, lighting, washi paper, Japanese, Shigeru Uchida, chōchin ] |
