| *What is [Izu Hexagonal Stone (IZU Hexagonal Stone)]? This is lava formed during the Pliocene Epoch (approximately 500–2.58 million years ago), a period when global cooling was accelerating. An ice age persisted for a long period from this time until 10,000 years ago, leading to a mass extinction of life. It is an intrusive rock composed of amphibole-rich dacite; lava that solidified underground fractured into five- or six-sided columns and emerged from the ground (columnar jointing). Most columns are about 10–20 cm in diameter. When quarried, they have a faintly light blue color, but because they contain iron, they rust over time and take on a reddish hue. Due to their incredibly unique shapes, they have long been cherished and often used as garden ornaments. Currently, Izu Rokuhou Stone is no longer mined, making it difficult to obtain. In Japan, rocks with the same structure can be found at Genbudo Cave in Hyogo Prefecture and in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture. 鮮新世(約500?258万年前)の地球の寒冷化が進んだ時代の溶岩。
この後から一万年前まで長くにわたり氷河期が続き、生物の大量絶滅が起きました。
角閃石デイサイトの貫入岩で、地中で固まった溶岩が五?六角形の柱の形状に節理し地面から生えてきたものです(柱状節理)。
太さは10?20cm程度のものが多く、採掘時にはほんのり水色で、鉄分が含まれているため時間が経つと錆びて赤みを帯びてきます。
あまりにも不思議な形をしていることから、そのまま庭に立ててオブジェにしたり長い時代にわたり愛されてきました。
現在では、現在伊豆六方石は採掘されておらず入手が困難となっています。
日本では兵庫県の玄武洞や長崎県佐世保でも同じ構造のものが見ることができます。
