This stone comes from a mysterious land where many ancient burial mounds and stone ruins—still shrouded in mystery—remain to this day. It is a renowned stone that displays a variety of hues—including green, yellow-green, and black—against a deep red background. Formed along the Central Structural Line, it consists primarily of chlorite—the same mineral series as the Solomonite from Tokushima Prefecture—with faint traces of pale yellow-green epidote. However, what sets it apart is its high volcanic iron content; over time, oxidation causes it to develop a vivid red color. It has been prized since ancient times as a decorative stone for altars and gardens, and specimens from the area around the Yoshino River are particularly prized for their beauty. 今もなお謎の多い古墳や石の遺跡が多く残るミステリアスな土地の石です。
深い赤色をベースに緑や黄緑、黒などが様々な表情を見せる銘石の一つです。
中央構造線に沿って、徳島県のソロモナイトと同系列の緑泥石(クロライト)に仄かに淡い黄緑の緑簾石(エピドート)を主成分としています。
しかし、それらと大きく違うのは火山性の鉄分が多く含まれているため、時間をかけて酸化が進み鮮やかな赤色を発色しています。
古来より盆石や庭石としても愛でられ、特に吉野川周辺のものは美しいと珍重されます。
