*What is [Kajiki Stone]?

It is a type of prized stone formed by a pyroclastic flow resulting from a submarine eruption approximately 600,000 years ago, which was quarried in Kajiki-cho, Aira City.

It is a rare stone, as the volume of quarrying has now decreased significantly.

It contains numerous tiny air bubbles, indicating that the pyroclastic flow at that time was extremely hot and violent.

These bubbles resemble lava, and inside them, minerals separated from the lava have crystallized to form geodes, making it a delight to examine each individual bubble with a magnifying glass.

The place name “Kajiki” is said to derive from the “Legend of the Rudder Tree,” which tells of a ship’s rudder that was left behind, from which a sprout grew and eventually became a camphor tree.

During the Heian period, this region was the domain of the Kajiki clan and, through a donation to Ōsumi Shōhachiman Shrine, became part of the shrine’s lands.

Osumi Shōhachiman Shrine is the present-day Kagoshima Jingu; its principal deity is Yamachihiko, the son of Ninigi-no-Mikoto and Konohanasakuya-hime, and the grandfather of Emperor Jimmu.
