| *What is [Akiyoshi Limestone (AKIYOSHI Limestone)]? The Akiyoshidai Plateau, where uniquely shaped limestone formations have risen and spread out, is Japan’s largest karst plateau and has been designated a Special Natural Monument. From the Carboniferous to the Permian periods of the Paleozoic Era (350 million years ago), the Akiyoshi Plateau was submerged beneath the sea and formed a coral reef. Limestone is formed when the calcium-rich material from these reefs breaks down, settles on the seafloor or elsewhere, and then crystallizes due to hydrothermal activity caused by geothermal heat. Today, that coral reef has risen from the sea to become land, and as a National Park, it has become a famous tourist destination visited by visitors every day. Furthermore, limestone that has undergone further metamorphism is called marble. (*Strictly speaking, marble is referred to as “onyx marble” and is distinguished from limestone.) Limestone is white, while marble comes in colors such as gray and features unique, beautiful striations. White limestone is translucent. 独特の形をした石灰岩が隆起して広がる秋吉台は、日本最大のカルスト台地で特別天然記念物に指定されています。
古生代石炭紀から二畳紀(3億5000万年前)の秋吉台は海の中にあり、サンゴ礁でした。
そのカルシウム質が分解され海底などで堆積したものが地熱による熱水作用で結晶化したものを石灰岩(ライムストーン)といいます。
今ではそのサンゴ礁も海から隆起して陸となり国定公園として日々観光客が訪れる名所となりました。
そして、石灰岩が更に変成したものを大理石といいます。
(*正確には大理石はオニックスマーブルと呼ばれ、石灰岩とは区別されます。)
石灰岩は白く、大理石はグレーなど色が付き独特の美しい縞模様が入ります。
白の石灰岩は光を通します。
