| *What is [Joganji Stone]? It is a type of stone found in the Joganji River in Toyama Prefecture. The Joganji River is a wild, fast-flowing river that cascades 56 km from an elevation of 3,000 meters. The stones found here—known as “Joganji Marble”—are beautiful, lustrous stones that take on a spherical shape as they roll down the river, earning them the name “Joganji Marble.” It is said that during the Ansei landslide 140 years ago, boulders weighing as much as 400 metric tons were swept downstream from upstream, which illustrates just how rapid the current is. While there are various theories regarding the origin of its name, one interpretation is that, since the river used to flood frequently, the name carries the meaning of “constantly praying” that it will not flood. 富山県常願寺川で産出する石です。
常願寺川は標高3000mもの高さから56kmという短い距離を流れる急流の暴れ川で産出される常願寺の石は転がるうちに玉のような形になるので「常願寺玉石」といわれる、艶のある美しい石です。
140年前の安政の土石流では、400トンもある玉石(大石)が上流から流れてきたとされ、どのくらいの急流の川であるかを物語ります。
名前の由来は諸説ありますが、氾濫する川だったので氾濫しないように「常に願う」意味があります。
