| *What is [Ontake Black Stone]? Mount Ontake stands at 3,067 meters, making it the second-highest peak in Japan after Mount Fuji. Long revered as a sacred mountain, since the Edo period, stones from Mount Ontake have been used to craft “Reijinhi” (sacred stone monuments), and some 20,000 of these stones now stand as guardian stones throughout the mountain. At Mount Ontake, where the worship of natural stones is deeply rooted, it is said that erecting an Ontake Black Stone inscribed with the name of a spirit deity allows believers to rest in peace on this mountain. The “Ontake Kuroko Shin-ishi” is an andesite quarried in the form of cobblestones. It has a glassy black luster, and upon closer inspection, reveals fine patterns—no two stones are exactly alike. 御嶽山は、富士山に次ぐ2番目高さの3,067m。
古くから霊山とされ、江戸時代より、この石で霊神碑(れいじんひ)が制作され、御嶽山の守護石として2万という数が至る所に鎮座しています。
自然石信仰の御嶽山では、霊神の名前を印した御嶽黒光真石を建て、信者がこの山に眠れることでもあるといわれています。
御嶽黒光真石は安山岩で、玉石の状態で採掘され、ガラス光沢のある黒で、よく見ると細かな模様が入っており、一つとして同じものがありません。
