*What is [Five-Color Sazare Stone]?

A famous stone from the Niyodo River in Kochi Prefecture.

The Niyodo River is known as “Japan’s clearest river” and is famous for its beauty and high clarity, so much so that the water is referred to as “Niyodo Blue.”

The five-colored stones quarried in this region are widely used for interior design and as garden stones.

While Shikoku is home to a variety of colored stones such as arknite, solomonite, and quartz, five-colored stones—which display all five colors—are a rare specialty found only in select locations, such as Goshiki-hama on Awaji Island.

When these five colors form a conglomerate, they are called “Goshiki Sazare-ishi.”

Currently, quarrying of all these stones is prohibited by law, and they cannot be collected.
