Description
| Caricatures of Birds, Beasts and Humans [Jacquard Print Towel] Made with towels from Imabari, which are highly absorbent and soft to the touch. Made in Japan. *Tsugao, owned by Kozan-ji Temple (artist unknown) A national treasure, a picture scroll handed down in Kozan-ji Temple, Kyoto. It consists of four scrolls, A, B, C and D. A and B are said to have been produced in the late Heian period and C and D in the Kamakura period. The scroll is 44 meters long. The emaki is 44 meters long, and the white drawings with ink lines are playful and representative of the world-famous caricatures. It is also considered the oldest [manga] in Japan. The artist is said to be Kakuyu, a Toba Buddhist priest, but there is no proof. |
