| Amabie is a half-human, half-fish monster that has been passed down in the sea of Higo Province (Kumamoto Prefecture) since the Edo period (1603-1868), and is said to be beneficial in preventing plague and disease. Yakushigama's amabie are prayed for good health at the Shioji Shrine in Nagasu-cho, Kumamoto Prefecture, which faces the Ariake Sea, famous for its [tachibakai], which is used to ward off evil spirits and eliminate bad luck. It is said that the sound of wind chimes not only carries coolness but also dispels evil spirits.
