Description
[More than Hokusai Manga! Unknown charms of Kyosai are condensed! Skeletons, frogs, and ghosts dance! Dancing! Festivities! Kawanabe Kyosai (1831~1889) was a Kano school painter who also created many ukiyo-e prints from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era. In recent years, his free and unrestrained style of painting has been attracting attention, and his paintings and prints have been introduced in many exhibitions and books, etc. On the other hand, there is a genre of "picture books" that has not received much attention. [Picture books are not books for children, but rather woodblock-printed illustrated books containing a variety of Kyosai's drawings. From skeletons to anatomy drawings, frogs, cats, and yokai, Kyosai's lively and humorous drawings were included in the book, which was published in large numbers in his later years as his popularity grew. The fact that many of these picture books were compiled in a hurry, or perhaps because the contents were not consistent as a single book, can be said to be a characteristic of "picture books. This book contains 224 selected works from the Ota Memorial Museum of Art's collection, including "Kyosai Manga," "Kyosai Blunt Paintings," "Kyosai Drunken Paintings," "Kyosai Hyakki Gatan," and other representative "picture books. The works are categorized into the three main genres of "Figures and Skeletons," "Animals and Nature," and "Monsters and Gods and Buddha" to clarify Kyosai's perspective, and all works are reorganized with explanatory notes to further explore the charm of the artist known as the "painting devil. This book is published as a series following the three-volume long-selling "Hokusai Manga" from Seigensha Bunko. The prints of 150 years ago have been brought back to life in the modern age by the special technology of Yamada Photoengraving Factory. *All works are accompanied by commentary. You can understand Kyosai's humor and parodies! *All prints are illustrated with commentary; *Contribution by Hitoko Sawada, Kyosai's daughter, who wrote "Hoshi ga Ochita, Na Na" about the life of a woman who lived as a painter ; Table of Contents: Chapter 1: People and Skeletons Chapter 2 Animals and Nature Chapter 3: Specters and Gods and Buddha |
