| The term "kasane-no-shikome" originally referred to the colors produced by combining the two sides of a single versatile garment, but later the term "kasane-no-shikome" was also used to refer to a combination of colors used in a number of garments, such as a juni-hitoe (12-layered robe). かさねの色目は、もと一枚の袷（あわせ）仕立ての衣の裏表の裂（きれ）を合わせた色を言いましたが、後には十二単衣のように幾領も着装して表される衣色の配合色も「かさねの色目」と呼ぶようになりました。
