Description
| \Newly launched on October 1, 2024 (Tuesday)/. *Toshio Shibata [Typical Japan] Portfolio*. Toshio Shibata's signature work, [Japan Typical], is a series of compositional images of retaining walls and erosion control dams in the mountains and other areas of Japan that have been hardened with concrete. These walls and dams, built with Japan's advanced civil engineering technology, are strikingly beautiful and well-proportioned, but at the same time, they are man-made objects that are incompatible with nature, and in a sense, symbolize the "landscape of modern Japan. This portfolio consists of six collotype prints taken in Niigata, Fukushima, Miyazaki, and Tochigi between 1989 and 1990. Please enjoy the different textures of these works from silver halide prints. Toshio Shibata Born in Tokyo in 1949, Shibata graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in oil painting, and completed a master's degree in oil painting at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School in 1974. In 1992, he was selected for the "New Photography 8" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and in 1997, he had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, In the 2000s, he began to work in color, expanding his field of expression. His works are in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the National Museum of Art, Osaka, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Centre Georges Pompidou, among others, and he has published many books of his work. *What is a collotype? While offset printing, a common printing method, expresses colors and shading with a density of small dots, collotype expresses them with continuous gradation, which allows for more realistic and precise detail, similar to that of a photograph. The *Mini Portfolio Series is a series that focuses on size and set contents so that users can easily enjoy photographic works with the expressive power that only Collotype can offer. Each set contains 8 x 10" sheets of collotype prints, which can be held in your hand and admired one at a time, or framed and displayed as part of your interior design. |
